Fern

Hi, my name’s Ikra (ihk-rah), but I thought it’d be fun to go by Fern (the character from the children’s novel, Charlotte’s Web) for the class— since having a pseudonym is an option. (And I’m from Charlotte.) (And we’re on the World Wide Web.) I’m 23 years old, just graduated from Davidson, lost and confused about life and my purpose in it. 8 months later, here I am in a course on Digital Design! Professionally trying to learn web design, but the rest of my life is colorful and unclear. The engine that keeps me up late @ night is making something for someone or learning something new and exciting. Between me & my ultimate dream stands not knowing my ultimate dream or how to figure one out if it’s not steered by my mere whims & fancies.

Ikra, nice to be in another class with you, and I think your honesty is refreshing. I always question people who speak in absolutes about what they want to do (or anything) and this also includes myself and my own passion for journalism. Has your semester since graduation helped clear some of the fog in the way between you and your “ultimate dream”? I look forward to discussing this more with you over the course of the semester.

Hey AJ! Sorry I took so long to get back to your comment. I got sick one weekend and threw me off course and then I just got lazy. Ummm….I think it may have. I’m still kind of lost to tell you the truth on the whole ultimate dream thing. I’m curious about yours.

Hey! What did you study and what were you involved in on campus? I think it’s awesome that you’re back and in this class!

Hi Addie! I’m sorry I took so long and never replied. I kind of got sick one weekend and then just fell off and never went back to these comments. I studied history and was involved in Honor Council, taught spanish at Davidson Elementary for a little bit, and did some study abroad. I actually went through many organizations on campus trying to figure out what I wanted to commit myself to, like Rape Awareness Committee and then near my end at Davidson I was in the Student Library Advisory Board (SLAB).

I liked your Charlotte’s web pun. Also, I hope you tell us more about your experiences at Davidson. Welcome back!

Very cool! Do you have any interest in doing digital design for a company later on?

YES!! I totally do. I hope to build my own digital portfolio at some point once I have more experience with web design and digital design. (Sorry I took so long to get back to your comment).

On some level it’s gratifying for me to hear people who have graduated still have the same uncertainty about their future and life that I feel right now. I still just have to trust it will all work out eventually though. I’m hoping having some web design skills will help out with that as well though. Had you had much experience with WordPress or other web design before this class?

Hey Jonathan! Sorry I took so long to get back to your comment (I got sick that weekend and kind of never brought myself around to going through these comments). Yea agreed…..I am trying to trust it too but I don’t know. I just don’t how to figure it out. I do have a good amount of experience with WordPress for sure because I helped design my professor’s website and that’s where I got my first taste of digital design and realized I kind of liked web design (through being tossed into it as his assistant when I was a senior on campus.)

Hey, Fern! I’m still three semesters (including this one 😱) from graduation but I also struggle with conceptualizing my future. I felt very trapped by relatives asking my life plan over the holidays and then again when faced with the question of my ultimate dream. Hopefully our discoveries in this course will help us get a little closer to finding our ways.

Hey Niara! I know this is kind of out-of-the-blue and delayed response…but agreed. I hope you’ve come a little closer to finding your way in these past weeks. Have you? I think I may have; I just haven’t sat down and thought it yet.

Hi Fern! It is nice to meet you. I really like how you have decided to go by a pseudonym. I totally relate on not knowing what your ultimate dream is, and I think it is great that you are still exploring new possibilities.

Hi Ikra! It’s been a ton of fun working with you in class. Out of curiosity, what did you major in when you studied at Davidson? And any tips for current students?

Hey Jake! Sorry I took so long to get back to your comment…I got sick that weekend and just kind of never got around to it after that. Hoping to change that now. I studied history, and my tip would be: take courses you enjoy and love for no other sake than just learning about things that fascinate you. It’s a very freeing experience when the work comes out of love for what you’re learning. What’s your major/intended major?

Welcome (back) to Davidson! Your pseudonym is very clever, and I think a course on digital design will probably be a very valuable skill irrespective of what you choose to do in the future!

Hello Fern, I’m so happy you’ve chosen this name for this setting, because I think Charlotte’s Web is one of the most perfect books in the English language. I can’t read the last paragraph without feeling great joy and weeping at the same time. The book also ties me to my beloved Nana (Dorothy Esther Moses Gates), who loved E. B. White so much she wrote to him–and got a letter back! Maybe I should go by Avery or Templeton!

Hi Suzanne, WHAT! NO WAY!!!!! I can’t believe she got a response from E.B. White himself. I’m going to reread it this weekend (inspired by your comment), since I started it again as an adult after having read it as a child a few times I think. (I’m sorry I never got back to your comment earlier).

So many levels to Fern! Love it. BTW looks like Bitmoji was developed in 2007 in Canada, so it has been around for a bit!

Wow!!! Thanks for looking into this and sharing with me Sundi. How accurate do you think bitmoji is of me? (I won’t be offended if you think it’s really off. I am actually really invested in this question; I see updating my bitmoji seasonally as my side hobby).
